Meet a Local Host® in Taormina Riviera

Claudia is happy to welcome you to the wonderful Taormina Riviera on the island of Sicily where you will find a warm welcome, great food, and a rich landscape. She is sure that your memories of the island will remain forever in your heart!

Lipari & Vulcano

Visit two of the seven Aeolian islands, Lipari and Vulcano. Lipari is the largest and its soil is volcanic tuff, obsidian and pumice. The oldest rocks emerged about 225,000 years ago and volcanic phenomena are now limited to a modest activity in the presence of fumaroles and hot springs. Vulcano is very popular for those who enjoy the hot mud and fumaroles for cures.

Isola Bella

A small island near Taormina, it is also known as “The Pearl of the Ionian Sea.” It is located within a small bay on the Ionian Sea and was a private property until 1990, when it was bought by the Region of Sicily. It is now a nature reserve, administrated by the Italian branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature. There is a narrow path that often connects the island to the mainland beach. The island has a small and rather rocky beach which is a popular destination for sunbathers.

Vignazza Watchtower of Schisò Castle

The Watchtower in Giardini Naxos was built in the 16th century to protect the coast against raids by Barbary pirates. Schisò Castle overlooks the bay, and was originally constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Godfather

Mario Puzo enthusiasts may wish to visit the Godfather film sites of Forza d'Agrò, Savoca where Bar Vitelli and the wedding church are located, and Castello degli Schiavi.

Castelmola

This tiny, picturesque village, built to defend Taormina, is well worth a visit. Castelmola is famous for its almond wine and for the medieval castle ruins. See the cathedral dedicated to San Nicolò of Bari and the 17th century church built to honor San Giorgio.

Museum of Archaeology & Giardini-Naxos Excavations

In Taormina, learn more about Sicily's rich history at the Regional Museum of Archaeology. Located inside Palazzo Badia Vecchia on a Roman bath site, the museum has finds from Greek and Roman sites. Excavations of the first Greek colony on Sicily can be visited at Giardini-Naxos. There's part of a Greek temple and a museum.

Alcantara River Park

Alcantara River Park is famous for its gorges, fashioned into the rock by geological phenomena. Walking along a stretch of the river bed (from May to September due to water levels) is a truly unique experience.

Local Sicilian Specialties

Savor fresh fish such as swordfish, tuna, mackerel, sardines and anchovies prepared according to Sicilian tradition. Enjoy salads dressed with local olive oil. Try a granite al caffè con panna (iced coffee with whipped cream); Sicilian pastry filled with ricotta cheese, or delicious ices in soft round rolls, unique and wonderful on a hot day!

Sicilian Souvenirs

Ask your Local Host where to buy colorful local Sicilian ceramics and embroidery, Modica chocolate, and olive oil.

Sea and Sun

Just below Taormina, find beaches, coves, and a peaceful sea - perfect for relaxing. There are paths between the town and the coast as well as a cable car to Mazzaro, a nearby beach resort. Your Local Host will have the details.

Etnaland Amusement Park

Families will enjoy this water, theme, and prehistoric park. Ranked 15th among the 20 most beautiful parks in the world by the Los Angeles Times and winner of two "Parksmania Awards" (a worldwide amusement park award) for “Park of the year 2013” and “The Storm - Best European new attraction 2013”.

The Passeggiata (Evening Walk) & Music

Join the locals and promenade in the cool late evening. Your Local Host will have suggestions about local Sicilian music and cultural events.
