Charlottesville Must See Sights

On Your Own Suggestions

  • When you cross the threshold of Michie’s Tavern (circa 1784), you enter another time. Much like the 18th-century visitor, you will enjoy homemade Southern fare based on recipes from the period. After your hearty meal, a taste of the past lingers while you tour the original tavern and various outbuildings. Then stroll through the woods that lead to Meadow Run Mill and the General Store.
  • Visit the Downtown Mall. Several blocks in downtown Charlottesville have been closed off to traffic, creating a pedestrian-friendly area full of shops and restaurants. The old brick buildings, eclectic stores, and people make this a great place to explore. Just north of here on Park Street are the town hall and some of the oldest buildings in town.
  • Ash Lawn-Highland is a historic house museum, 535-acre working farm, and performing arts site. President James Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth, owned Ash Lawn-Highland from 1793 to 1826. Today, it is open for visitors to experience this special “place of comfort and hospitality.” You’re invited to fly kites in the spring, to enjoy the Summer Festival of children’s shows, to hear traditional music and opera in the Boxwood Gardens, and to cut your own Christmas tree!
