  • Learn about the Lakota culture and the importance of the bison at Tatanka: The Story of the Bison. Bison were the basis of life for Plains Indians, providing spiritual inspiration, food, clothing, shelter, household items, tools, weapons, and ceremonial items. The center is home to a hands-on interpretive center, Native American gift shop, and a larger-than-life bronze sculpture featuring 14 bison pursued by three Native American horseback riders.

  • Visit the Journey Museum, which takes you on an incredible trek through time—from the formation of the rugged Black Hills over 2.5 billion years ago to the present-day Western frontier. Fascinating exhibits showcase the people and events that shaped the history and heritage of this region.

  • Take a historical trip through the Black Hills of South Dakota on a genuine 1880s steam train. Located near Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, the locomotive offers a Western experience like no other. Hear the roar of the engine and the call of the whistle as the train winds its way through the scenic hills between Hill City and Keystone.

  • Spend time in Custer State Park, where a world of adventure awaits: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, fishing, chuck wagon suppers, and buffalo safaris. The park also boasts scenic drives, including the famous Needles Highway, and the Historic State Game Lodge, the “Summer White House” of President Calvin Coolidge.

  • Explore Wind Cave National Park, one of the world’s longest and most complex caves. Here you can take a tour to see the outstanding display of boxwork, an unusual and delicate cave formation resembling honeycomb.
