Meet a Local Host
Hi, I'm Elisabeth. I have worked as a tour guide the world over for 30 years, and I love it. Even though I'm a “world resident,” I was born and grew up in Zürich. I especially enjoy showing my home town to Monograms’ guests.
Limmatquai
Stroll along the Limmat riverbank by the Grossmünster Cathedral. Cross over one of the bridges to the Niederdorf area for small, typical restaurants and shops. Ask your Local Host about this and other interesting walks around town.
Swiss National Museum
The museum houses a fascinating collection of artifacts pertaining to Swiss cultural history.
Grossmünster Cathedral
Climb the Grossmünster tower for a wonderful view of Zürich.
West Quarter
Ask your Local Host about galleries and cultural events in Zürich’s West Quarter.
Bahnhofstrasse
With refined architecture to complement the fabulous goods inside the stores, window-shopping is always in fashion here.
Toys
For some fun family time, visit the Toy Museum or one of the classic children’s stores on the Bahnhofstrasse. See all manner of traditional Swiss toys and crafts—made with great patience and devotion—including wooden and wind-up toys.
Swiss Watches and Souvenirs
Shop for watches and other special gifts at Bucherer or Gubelin stores. The small, multi-purpose Swiss army knife, delicate embroidery, or carved wood items are traditional souvenirs.
Chocolate and Cheese
Peruse rack upon rack of glorious chocolate bars and delicious truffles, a paradise for chocoholics. Check out the stores for Gruyère and other specialty cheeses for which Switzerland is famous.
Roesti, Fondue and Geschnetzeltes
Try typical local dishes, including hashbrown ‘roesti’, fondues, cheese raclette, bratwurst sausages, and the Zürich veal dish, Geschnetzeltes. Swiss bread is particularly good, and there are many varieties to enjoy. Also try fruit liqueur or the white wines from the hilly areas of Switzerland.
Opera House
Built in 1891 on the shores of Lake Zürich, it opened with a performance of Richard Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin.’ It is considered one of the best venues in the world for opera. Ask your Local Host about possible performances.
