Paris

Meet Marc, one of your Local Hosts in ParisMonograms provides travellers access to a Local Host, so you will have someone on hand to answer those vacation questions pertaining to Paris. Our Local Host will ensure that you feel comfortable and welcomed while on vacation and help you maximize your time so you can enjoy Paris. No waiting in line at the concierge desk or trying to ask your waitress at breakfast directions to the shopping district. Simply ask your Local Host about Paris and you'll be on your way in no time. Plus, your Local Host will share local Paris insights and share suggestions for getting off the beaten path, leaving you more time to create lasting vacation memories that are yours alone.

Meet a Local Host

I was born in Paris and have always lived in the picturesque Montmartre area. Thanks to several years in the art history section of La Sorbonne University, I know every corner of the “City of Light.” I truly enjoy sharing my passion and knowledge about magical “Paree.” I have been a Local Host in Paris for many years, and my daily challenge is to make Monograms’ guests feel not like tourists, but like locals.

Montmartre, Latin Quarter

Try a walking tour of the Montmartre district, where artists such as Picasso, Monet, and Van Gogh worked. Your Local Host can suggest other intriguing walking tours of areas such as the Latin Quarter, the fashion district, or where to find the graves of Jim Morrison and Chopin in the Père Lachaise Cemetery.

Sacré-Coeur

While in Montmartre, visit the Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart). This pristine, white-stone church was proposed as a memorial to the soldiers killed in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, but it was not completed until the end of World War I. The church features one of the world's largest mosaics, which depicts Christ with outstretched arms, and a massive 19-ton church bell. Enjoy wonderful views of Paris from the Sacré-Coeur steps.

Musée d’Orsay

Stroll through centuries of artwork at the Musée d’Orsay, which houses an extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Cezanne. You can also admire Rodin’s statues, and do not miss the spectacular reception room.

Sainte-Chapelle

Fifteen intricately designed panels of stained glass—commissioned by Louis IX— depict 1,100 story-telling scenes.

Jardin du Luxembourg, Parc du Champ de Mars

Families may like to take a stroll in one of the famous parks and take a whirl on their charming carousels. You can also see the “pétanque” players, or sit on one of the “so typical” Parisian green chairs.

Seine Bridges

Find your favorite bridge. There are 37, and they are all different—from plain to gilded and from new to over 400 years old. The special atmosphere they create across the Seine River helps to make Paris one of the most romantic cities.

Shakespeare and Company Bookstore

In the Roaring 20s, this quirky bookstore on the Bohemian Left Bank was the meeting place for some of literature's greats—like Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Joyce to name a few. It continues to serve as a cultural magnet for struggling writers and visitors alike.

Markets

Ask your Local Host how to get to the flea market for affordable objects d’art, or visit one of the food markets. The French know how to turn food display into an art form. See rainbows of fresh fruit and vegetables, soft palettes of bread, and colossal wheels of cheese—France has over 400 varieties of cheese. And when you're ready for dessert, specialty stores abound—from tarts and pastries to crêpes and pains au chocolat. Other specialties to try include onion soup with a fresh baguette, coq au vin (a classic chicken dish), croquet monsieur, quiche Lorraine, escargot, steak-frites, and famous French wines and champagne.

Champs-Elysées, Shopping

Shop at haute couture boutiques by the Champs-Elysées. Perfumes and scarves are classic gifts, as well as French berets, lace, collection dolls, and pottery. Use your included specially arranged discounts at the famous Galeries Lafayette, or check out the Printemps department store.

Cafés

When you’re ready for a break, join the locals at one of the cafés, sip a glass of wine or a café au lait (hot milk coffee), and watch the world go by in true Parisian style.

Amsterdam

Meet a Local Host

Hello, my name is Léon. I was born and raised in Amsterdam, Capital of the Netherlands. After travelling and studying Tourism, I now welcome Monograms guests to Amsterdam. As a Local Host, meeting people from all over the world, and getting to know different cultures, makes my job more than enjoyable.

View Vacation Packages

Dam Square

Take a stroll to Dam Square, sit at one of the terraces and people watch to get a feel for the city. You’ll see bicycles are a favourite means of transport - there are nearly as many bicycles as citizens.

Anne Frank House, The Rembrandt House

If you’ve read her Diary, you’ll want to see where Anne lived and wrote her remarkable and poignant story. The Anne Frank House, as well as the attractive Rembrandt House where the Master lived, are both on walking routes your Local Host will be pleased to tell you about to discover more of Amsterdam at your own pace.

Heineken Beer Brewery Museum or T’IJ Brewery

See the famous Heineken Beer Brewery Museum. Or maybe the more recently opened T’IJ specializing in biological ingredients; the second largest wooden windmill in the Netherlands stands next door.

National Gallery, Maritime Museum , Van Gogh Museum, Bags & Purses Museum

Amsterdam has several splendid museums, these are just a few, ask your Local Host for more details according to your tastes. The Van Gogh collection has some 200 paintings, 550 sketches, and hundreds of letters from Van Gogh to his brother, Theo.

Hortus Botanical Gardens

The Hortus has an expansive collection of more than 6,000 varieties of plants illustrating over 350 years of Dutch horticultural history. From the "coffee plant that fathered all the coffee in Brazil" to a nursery created exclusively for tropical palms, it’s a heavenly destination for plant-lovers the world over.

Markets

With over thirty weekly markets, there’s plenty of choice. Wander through the Albert Cuyp market, the Flea market on Waterlooplein, or see the Floating Flower Market on the Single.

Zoo, Planetarium, Vondelpark

Families may wish to visit the Artis Zoo and Planetarium or the Vondelpark where the locals go walking, biking, relaxing and pick-nicking. During the summer season concerts and plays are held in the park’s open air theater.

Shopping, P.C. Hoofstraat, Jordaan

Wander along the P.C. Hooftstraart near the Museum quarters to shop or browse for exclusive goods. Good buys in Holland include diamond jewelry, wooden articles such as clogs, embroidery and Delft pottery. In the 17th century, Amsterdam's canal diggers, bridge builders and stonemasons called Jordaan home. Now eccentric, one of a kind, shops, chic restaurants and painstakingly manicured courtyards make this a unique spot.

Pancakes, Poffertjes and Pea Soup

When you’re ready for a snack, try one of the local pancakes, there are over 300 varieties! Or maybe sample the similar poffertjes. Then there’s the many varieties of Dutch cheese. Pea soup is another specialty made with peas, potatoes, carrots, celery, smoked bacon, and sausage.

Rijsttafel

The rijsttafel is a unique fusion of Indonesian and Dutch culinary traditions from colonial times. It was a Dutch custom to eat leftovers on Sundays, the Indonesian people decided to reinvent this by cooking everything fresh. The main dish of a rijsttafel is noodles or rice with several small side dishes like meat, fish, vegetables. Tiny plates of food, arranged from mild to very, very spicy fill the table. Round off with a sip or two of Jenever, the Dutch liquor made from wheat or fruit.

London

Monograms provides travellers access to a Local Host, so you will have someone on hand to answer those vacation questions pertaining to London. Meet a Local Host

A dedicated team of Local Hosts are on hand at every Monograms hotel to offer you advice during your stay in London - whether you need help on how to travel about the British capital, how to book one of the many optional excursions available, or to recommend a nice place to dine in style.

The Dorchester Hotel

For afternoon tea, why not nip over to the Dorchester? Winner of the 2007 Tea Council's award for Finest Afternoon Tea, this hotel definitely keeps with tradition. Remember, the dress code is smart.

Vinopolis: City of Wine

Interactive learning at its best. Wander the airy vaults of this cellar and listen to the history of wine while sipping on the matter at hand. A museum never tasted so good.

The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret

Climb a creaky spiral staircase to a church attic for a look at Britain's only surviving operating theatre, where limbs were sawed off in front of a live, viewing audience. Tour an assemblage of other Victorian medical devices, and you'll be glad to step soundly back into the 21st century.

Red Rose

It'd be a shame to leave London without sampling its celebrated Indian cuisine. From tandooris to saffron fish tikka, there's something for everyone at the Red Rose, smack dab in the middle of town. To test your tongue's pain tolerance, try the hotter than hot Harry Mirch Chicken.

Bramah Tea and Coffee Museum

Tea and coffee connoisseurs will find this small museum fascinating, in which the story of London's premier caffeinated beverages unfolds. Stop by the museum café for a wide selection of the museum's subjects.

Hampstead Heath

Take a vacation from the city without leaving it. Meadows, hills, woods and ponds sprawl across this 791-acre park. Wander nearby cobblestone streets to lose all sense of time as pristine Georgian cottages and gas lamps galore light your path.

The Dove

This charming 17th-century inn is one of West London's favorite watering holes. Tucked away down a tiny alley, this historical pub serves excellent fish and chips and is an ideal place to while away a lazy afternoon.

Chelsea Football Club - Stadium Tours

You probably know Chelsea as home to one of Britain's top football clubs. The Chelsea FC stadium tour offers a unique glimpse inside the very heart of Stamford Bridge where you can visit the world class changing rooms, be the manager in the dug-out, walk up the players' tunnel and see some of the best views of the stadium. Make sure you bring your camera!

The Saatchi Gallery

Housed in the former military barracks of the Duke of York's Headquarters, you find 70,000 square feet of contemporary art exhibition. The former ad man Charles Saatchi champions young artists and many of them are unknown when first exhibited, not only to the general public but also to the commercial art world.
